In a gaming world where we've stopped complaining about clones and accepted them as the norm, novel gameplay is as rare as hens' teeth. In this way, Bot Colony is well worth your time, attention, and support. That alone deserves my thumbs up.That said, though it has been getting worked on for quite some time, it looks a bit dated, and the actual gameplay in Bot Colony is really klunky. It could be worse, but the things it does well are the things most players are not going to notice, and the things it does poorly are showstoppers.If you have ever played an old school text adventure, you might understand the frustration of trying to wrap your head around the developer's means of communication. How do you tell a robot to place a shaker of salt exactly how it looks like in a picture? I have no idea, the AI is smart enough to put it on the table to the left of a coffee maker and that's no minor achievement in programming, but I can't figure out how to tell it to put it down exactly where it needs to be. I guess that kind of difficulty makes sense when you add 3D space to a text adventure. Anyway, I have not been able to get past the tutorial.One thing they keep trying to add to Bot Colony is voice recognition, but I have yet to see it working particularly well. Basically, they're thinking it would be really cool if they have an AI you can talk to with your voice and that AI can do things for you, and they've been spending a lot of development time on getting that to work. As a player, I would have preferred they fix the gameplay problems first, but I guess they develop other products that make use of voice recognition so that's their agenda. Fortunately, you can also type your commands.As for the long development time, behind the scenes there have been some major financial issues, and this has slowed progress on the game quite a bit, to the point where it's fair for a player to wonder who is left to work on it? Lately, the game seems to somehow be making progress, so that's encouraging. I hope these guys continue to put out novel game concepts.. In its current state, I've had no problems running this game on my iMac running Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp. I usually do not purchase Early Access games, but I'm a total nerd for Asimov's Robot books and this game's notion of robots seems pretty reflective of Asimov's characterization of robots and their interaction with humans. I'm also a computational linguist, so the inclusion of NLU (Natural Language Understanding) had me very curious as well. NLU is complicated to achieve since meaning needs to be derived from an utterance, which sometimes means inferences must be made, but I think it works pretty well in this game, especially for the game being Early Access. I'd love to see the NLU improved and extended to other genres of games. But I think the first implementation--dealing with robots that don't always understand pragmatics--is a perfect first implementation.. not very funslowpoor controls. Excellent idea and game have improved during time. Technology Bot Colony brings will redefine games interact and behaviour.Devs have done huge work and hopefully they'll continue working with the game so make it even more better and enhance the story with new capters.. Although it's an Early Access Game, it has great potential and I liked what I have seen so far! 9/10. I bought Bot Colony a few years ago and I don't regret it even though the game is still in early access and probably will be for some time. This game is something completely different and unique. The developers of this game have succeeded in bringing to the market some completely new game mechanics that other companies are just dreaming about. They have come up with their own new AI mechanics for this game and made them part of the gameplay.I would recommend this game for people who:- Like games with new and unique approaches, new experiences- Like games\/genres with a bit slower gameplay (compared to fast paced action games)- Like to support a small company that works hard to start a completely new kind of genre of video games that will bring the whole industry forward- Are interested in AI, robotics, technology or scifi- Are interested\/prepared to play around a bit with robots and learn to communicate with them (Isn't really hard but not recommended for the most inpatient players or those that expect perfect AI that will be able to communicate with you like another human, the technology isn't really at that stage yet)- Are interested in playing a game with a lot to offer but that is still a work in progress and rough around the edges in some partsThe game is amazing as it is but would be even more great if the devs find a new publisher who will see the real potential of this game\/genre and the ambition and skills of these developers so we would be able to enjoy even more of their work in the future! There is no limit to the potential this genre and game series has with the right amount of work and money, I believe the technologies in the game will continue getting better and better with time. I believe this game is ahead of it's time in many ways, in the future there will probably be more games that attempt to add similar mechanics to their games. Right now this is the best you can find and a game worth playing if you are interested in AI or games that offer new and unique experiences.. Quite an interesting concept. What if we made this available as a tool in which you could import your own characters, a setting of your choice, and you could command the characters using a text script? (as you do in Intruder). Add special effects and editing tools, and you'd have what it takes to produce your own CG videos. With appropriate controls to synchronize character behaviour and speech, you could also make your own games (so, a modding tool). The key idea is to create animation through language, which opens this up to anyone (today, it's only animators).A new medium of creative expression. Thoughts?. Checkpoints in Intruder - April 28 Upgrade: Since the game was relaunched on February 21, we worked hard to offer you a smoother game experience. The main feature in this version are checkpoints in Intruder. You no longer have to finish the investigation (2 hours) AND the object placement (1 -2 hours) in one session. Just EXIT and then CONTINUE at a later time/date to continue playing from the last checkpoint. We create a checkpoint after every 4 Jimmy videos. BTW: Jimmy’s videos you uncoverd are listed like this (Thursday HH:MM, HH:MM, Friday HH:MM). Green HH:MM means you’ve seen all the videos in that morning, afternoon or evening, yellow HH:MM means there’s still videos to discover around that part of day. after every 3 objects replaced. Bot Colony Heads Up: To react to recent posts, Bot Colony is still being developed. I'll summarize the game history for those who are new to this Community, and say a few words about our future plans.WHERE ARE WE NOW AND HOW DID WE GET HERE?When we released it in June 2014, we were 45. Now we're 7. If you go through old announcements, you'll see that the game came close to being shut down in January 2015. Recent posts complaining about jerkiness, frame rate, sluggish graphics - are unfortunately well founded. We won't be able to do much IN THE SHORT TERM. In a nutshell, we weren't lucky with our first 2 game engine choices. First we developed our own, called Anitron, until its architect (Glen Ozymok, recipient of an Academy Award) passed away in 2011 at a very young age. It took more than a year to switch to the Havok Vision engine. Then, Microsoft acquired Havok and discontinued Vision. Autodesk, who made HumanIK used for Inverse Kinematics (to get robots to grab stuff), shut it down. Ditto for Scaleform, used for User Interface. Bot Colony could have great potential if we had the resources to switch engines (again :) and go to Unreal 4 or Unity. However, the game never sold enough to support itself. In this situation, we need a partnership with another studio that believes in the potential of the game and wants to partner with us and help us change engines and improve gameplay. Or we need to make serious money in some other way.WHAT'S NEXT?We kept developing aggressively since 2014, but we focused mostly on our NLU technology, which is the unique thing about Bot Colony. It's also the technology we can control (as opposed to engine).We DO have the major parts of Riot working, but the Hunter Bot circles the Oil Rig at a frame rate that's simply too low. We decided that it was critical for us to keep making MAJOR advances in Natural Language Understanding (NLU). We're now working on a new game called Jimmy's World (see http://northsideinc.com/index.php/videogames/ ). Jimmy's World will be a free game using our next-generation technology platform. We'll launch it first on Steam and then on mobile and tablets. This is where our efforts are focused now. The technology from JW will be used in Bot Colony - but we'd really like to switch engines to benefit from all our work. If we can't offer a smooth game experience - similar to other 3D games, the game will never make it, never mind how great the conversation is and how smart the robots are. Microsoft have kindly given us the sources to Vision - but we'd rather work with a supported engine. We'll deliver on our promise to launch Riot, even if it has to be on Vision - but we won't do it before Jimmy's World is launched.FYI, we do have the story, assets, animations, etc for TWO episodes after Riot - one in the Old VIllage and one in the Hotel (if you read the novel), but it's premature to say more about that. Currently, Bot Colomy definitely qualifies as a labor of love.WHY BUY AND PLAY BOT COLONY?In spite of being rough around the edges, Bot Colony is a very unique game offering a very unique experience that simply cannot be had with another game: conversation as the main game mechanic. You can command robots through some fairly detailed actions, and you can investigate using your own words. You basically get 3 - 5 hours of gameplay in which you can have hundreds (we've seen > 400) of intelligent, relevant exchanges with robots, making progress in the game. And you can do this through SPEECH, that now works beautifully (you can also type). Is this worth fifteen bucks? Probably.. What's Next and The Untold Story video: We're now making a last ditch effort to find a solution to keep the game going past March 15. It's an industrial espionage thriller depicting realistic verbal interactions with robots – it was meant to set the benchmark for the kind of AI we hoped to achieve in the game. A gift to our fans, Bot Colony - The Untold Story was uploaded to Steam recently (it's the 3rd video from the left on our Store page). This 30 minute video was made to give a potential developer a complete view of the game, to help estimate the effort required to complete it. The video goes through all 12 episodes, using prototype assets and stills. A bit clinical (given the intended audience), the video does give a good idea of the scope of Bot Colony, and how much we had advanced before we had to stop. I hope that people who watch it will agree that Bot Colony can be a lot more than just talking to boring drones. The game now has quite a bit to offer. In the new update, you piece together a juicy story from video clips a domestic robot recorded (RVM’s). You discover these video clips through conversation – truly unique gameplay not offered by any other game. In the two episodes released, you command robots through language under time-constraints – also unique gameplay. With the Untold Story video and the eBook – the Bot Colony story now has closure and can be enjoyed 'as is', like a released game. If Bot Colony continues to attract attention - it's now rated as popular content on Steam, who knows? What next?
